ToggleThe West Coast is known for its fishing industry and small coastal holiday towns – but it is more than this, it enjoys a unique beauty of its own.
During the flowering season, normally at the end of winter, the fields are transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour. The small town of Darling becomes a hive of activity and attracts many tourists during this time. This little town is still quite rural and one can enjoy the simple, friendly hospitality found here. Despite its rustic atmosphere, Darling has a good infrastructure and offers guest all the needed conveniences while away from home.
Langebaan lagoon is a water sport and fishing destination also boasting excellent conditions for windsurfing and kite boarding. The West Coast National park, a popular birding destination, surrounds Langebaan Lagoon. Smaller wildlife can also be seen amongst the coastal vegetation. This is a beautiful area to enjoy nature walks. Saldanha Bay, which extends from the Langebaan lagoon, is known for its fishing and steel industries.
Further inland one finds the Cederberg Wilderness Region, with its interesting rock formations carved by the wind. A number of ancient bushman rock-art sites are found in and around these Cederberg Mountains. Rock climbing, hiking and mountain biking are some of the outdoor activities enjoyed in the area. South Africa’s highest vineyard is also found here.
The Swartland lies in the southern area of the West Coast, and is a large wheat growing area. Piketberg and Citrusdal, to the north, are fruit growing areas found along the Olifants and Berg Rivers. Wine tasting can be enjoyed on the Olifants River and Swartland Wine Routes.
A good road infrastructure and signage make driving through the West Coast pleasant, as one meanders through the different towns. The West Coast offers visitors many things to do and see. A number of good accommodation facilities make this a great place to unwind and de-stress.
The West Coast is an ideal holiday destination for the whole family.
